Story of the Monkey King ~ Jatak Tales In English
Once upon a time, many monkeys lived in the garden of a king
and used to jump and jump there very freely.
One day the royal priest was passing under the gate of that
garden. A mischievous monkey was sitting on top of that door. As soon as the
Raj-Purohit came down to him, he put urine on his bald head. Surprised, the
priest looked around, then with an open mouth he looked up. The monkey then
defecated in his open mouth. When the angry priest asked to teach them a
lesson, all the monkeys sitting there gnashed their teeth and made fun of him
even more.
When Kapiraj came to know that the Rajpurohit was angry with
the monkeys living there, he immediately advised his companions to leave the
garden and travel somewhere else. All the monkeys obeyed him. And immediately
left from there. But an arrogant monkey and his five friends did not listen to
Kapiraj's advice and continued to live there.
After a few days, a maidservant of the king put the wet Chavan
outside the kitchen of the palace to dry. A sheep caught sight of him and
rushed to eat the rice. When the maid saw the sheep eating rice, she hit the
sheep with a burning stick taken out of the hearth, due to which the wool of
the sheep started burning. The burning sheep reached the elephant's stable
running, due to which the stable caught fire and many elephants got burnt.
The king called a meeting for the treatment of elephants in which the royal priest was the head. The priest told the king that the fat of monkeys is an effective ointment for the wounds of elephants. Then what! The king immediately ordered his soldiers to bring the fat of the monkeys. The soldiers went to the garden and in the blink of an eye killed that arrogant monkey and his five hundred companions.
Mahakapi and his companions who lived in another garden
continued to enjoy the rest of their lives.
