Lion and Jackal ~ Jatak Tales In English
Years ago, a strong lion used to live in a cave in the Himalayas. One day he was returning to his cave after hunting and devouring a buffalo. Then on the way he found a ferocious jackal who prostrated before him by lying down. When the lion asked him the reason for doing so, he said, "Sir, I want to be your servant. Please take me under your shelter. I will serve you and live off the prey left by you." The lion obeyed him and kept him in his shelter friendly.
Within a few days, the jackal became very fat after eating the prey left by the lion. Seeing the prowess of the lion every day, he also considered himself to be the image of the lion.
One day he said to the lion, "Oh lion! I too have become as strong as you. Today I will hunt and eat an elephant and leave the rest of its meat for you."
Since the lion looked at the jackal in a friendly way, he did not mind his words and prevented him from doing so. Trapped in confusion, he stood on the top of the mountain, rejecting the advice of Dhambi Siyar Singh. From there he looked around and saw a small group of elephants under the mountain.
Then, making the sound of a jackal three times like a lion, he jumped on a big elephant. But instead of falling on the head of the elephant, it fell at its feet. And the elephant moved forward by keeping its front leg above his head with his cool gait. In a moment the jackal's head was shattered and his lifeless birds flew away.
Watching all the actions of the jackal from the top of the mountain, the lion then told this story -
Those who are foolish and proud have such a speed.
