The Story of Nigrodharaj Deer ~ Jatak Tales In English.

A golden deer once lived in the forests of Varanasi. His eyes shine like gems; The horns were shining with silver and his body was bigger and more beautiful than other deer. He was the king of five hundred deer and was called Nigrodharaj. In the same forest there lived another deer like him. He was also the king of five hundred deer. His name was Sakha.

In those days, the king of Varanasi was very fond of deer meat. Everyday he was fond of eating new dishes of deer meat. The king's followers used to be very upset because the deer were very alert and very fast, they used to disappear from the eyes in a moment. So one day the king's men found a solution not to run after the deer every day. They surrounded it from all sides except a footpath leading from the forest to the city and started marching to the center of the forest with drums and music.

Then all the antelope gathered in a garden of the king through the path leading to the city. As soon as all the deer reached the garden, the people closed the garden gate. There were also two golden deer among those deer. When the king heard his discussion, he himself came to see him and because of his uniqueness, he gave his life.

After that day, whenever the king's followers came to kill a deer, fearing their arrival, the deer started running everywhere, due to which many deer were killed or injured in place of one deer. To avoid this disaster, the deer held a meeting and decided that every day a deer should go to the king's ambush and sacrifice himself. The king's followers were also pleased with the cooperation of the deer and used to kill only the slaughtered deer that came.

One day it was the turn of a female deer. A small deer was growing in his stomach. Since she lived in the herd of Sakha deer, she went to her king and prayed to send someone else in her place. Branch Deer rejected his point saying that it was not possible to change the law. Crying and crying, the deer again reached Nigrodharaj and repeated her prayer in front of him too. Nigrodharaj then thought it appropriate to sacrifice his life to help him.

The next day, when the king's followers found a golden deer standing ready to die at the place of slaughter, the information of the incident was immediately conveyed to the king. The king wanted to know the reason why the deer was ready to die even after being donated. That's why he immediately reached the spot and wanted to know from Nigrodharaj the reason for his readiness to die. Nigrodharaj then told him the story of the pregnant deer. Hearing this, the king donated abhay-daan to that pregnant deer along with him. Nigrodharaj then asked about the other deer what the king would like to do for their lives. The king then said, "He will also receive the gift of life". Nigrodha asked, "What will happen to the souls of the remaining animals?" The king said, "He will also get life-giving." The deer then asked about the lives of birds and aquatic animals.

King
